Size: Newborn
APPROXIMATE Measurements:
From top of hat to brim- 23 ¾ inches long (this measurement is not including the pom)
Circumference of hat- 12 ½ inches around
Materials:
H Hook
Worsted weight (colors A & B) about 1 oz of each
Techniques used-
hdc, sl st, sc, ch, increase (see below for directions).
Hat is worked from the top down.
***NOTE-PATTERN IS WORKED SWITCHING COLORS EVERY OTHER ROUND. To switch colors without having to cut yarn every color change follow these instructions:
To switch from color A to color B, work round indicated in color A. At end of round as you are about to sl st, insert hook into first hdc, hook color B, and pull color B though both loops on hook. Leave unused color to tag along the inside of the hat until ready to use again in 2 rounds. You can do the same when you switch from color B to color A.
ROUNDS- Every round (with the exception of the increase rounds, round 1, and the last 3 sc rounds) you will hdc in 2nd st and work in round and end with a hdc in the base of ch 1. This will keep the seam aligned.
Increase round- Hdc in same st as ch 1, hdc half of round, 2hdc, then hdc in each st to end of round and again in same st as ch 1. Sl st in first hdc.
NOTE FROM DESIGNER- In order to make this pattern not so long and drawn out, I’ve described what most of the rounds will be like above. It will make it not so long but it will probably be more complicated to follow. Just make sure you take your time and keep count of your stitches every round and make sure you have read carefully the above notes. KEEP TRACK OF WHERE YOUR FIRST HDC WILL GO. Every regular round, you will put your first hdc in the SECOND st. In ALL increase rounds, your first hdc will go in the same st as your ch 1.
Instructions:
Round 1- Crocheting LOOSELY now and throughout, Ch 2. 8 hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Sl st in top of first hdc. (8hdc)
Round 2- Ch 1 (does NOT count as first hdc, now and throughout), hdc in all hdc around. Sl st.
Round 3- 23- Repeat round 2 remembering to switch colors every other round. (8 hdc)
Round 24- Ch 1, hdc in same st as ch 1. Hdc around and againin base of ch 1. (You should only be increasing 1 hdc) (9hdc)
Round 25- Increase round (see description above). (11hdc)
Round 26-28- Repeat round 2, remembering to switch colors. (11hdc)
Round 29- Increase round (see description above). (13hdc)
Round 30-32- Repeat round 2, remembering to switch colors. (13hdc)
Round 33- Increase round (see description above). (15hdc)
Round 34-36- Repeat round 2, remembering to switch colors. (15hdc)
Round 37- Increase round (see description above). (17hdc)
Round 38-40- Repeat round 2, remembering to switch colors. (17hdc)
Round 41- Increase round (see description above). (19hdc)
Round 42-44- Repeat round 2, remembering to switch colors. (19hdc)
Round 45- Ch 1, hdc same st as ch 1 and in next 5 hdc, 2hdc, hdc in next 6, 2hdc, hdc in next 5 and again in same st as ch 1. (22hdc)

Round 49- Ch 1, hdc in same st as ch 1 and in next hdc. *2hdc, hdc in next*, repeat *9 times. Hdc in base of ch 1. Sl st. (33hdc)
Round 50- Repeat Round 2.(switch colors). (33 hdc)
Round 51- Ch 1, hdc in same st as ch 1 and in next 2 hdc. *2hdc, hdc in next 2*, repeat * 9 times. Hdc in base of ch 1. Sl st. (44hdc)
Round 52-58- Repeat Round 2. Remembering to switch colors every other round. (44 hdc)

ReplyDeleteI finished one yesterday and it was a bit big for a newborn. I have a ball that I size my hats up too. LOL! So, I went back and to row 51 and took out 4 stitches, bringing it down to 40 instead. It seems a better fit for me. I used worsted yarn ... and crocheted loosely as stated ... but not too loose. Anyhow, the main thing is ... It's DONE and I LOVE it! HA! Thank you so much!! OH and the link to the pompom video is awesome. It's way better than the pompom on I found a couple of weeks ago. So thanks for that link too!! : )

ReplyDeleteThank you!! I'm trying to occupy some time while waiting on my little one to be born (yeah... she was due today) so I decided to pick up a crochet hook & start crocheting for the first time a couple nights ago. This pattern was the 4th hat I've made & your pattern was very simple for me to follow even though I'm super new at crocheting (this is only the 2nd pattern I've followed). It took me several hours since I still don't know exactly what I'm doing but I just finished it and I LOVE IT! =D

ReplyDeleteHi everyone! Thanks for all the lovely comments! It is always great to see when I'm out and about and I get an email alert that someone has left me a sweet comment. It really makes my day! THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteIf you email me and I don't respond within a few days, don't worry. I've been really busy and haven't been able to get around to answering emails. If you need help with figuring out what the abbreviations mean, youtube and google are GREAT sources to find most of this information out. Thanks again everyone!
Can someone tell me how I could increase in order to fit a 3-6 month baby? The circumference would need to be more like 14-16 inches. Thank you

Where do you find the 'pea shell' to put the baby into? I love your patterns, but want to use them for photo props (especially for my 1st grandchild due next spring.
ReplyDeleteNewest follower here. I'm just starting out with crochet. Could you think about making cute hat patterns like these in adult sizes. I love hats and am having a hard time finding cute ones for adults. Love your patterns by the way. Thanks so much for sharing.
